Chesterfield workhouse: exhibition and new book

The ‘Christ Church (Stonegravels) Workhouse and Pauper Grave Project’ will be the subject of a new book to be published in July. The publication is to be marked by an exhibition from Monday 11 to Monday 18 July in Chesterfield Library, 11 am to 3 pm (closed Sunday).

Many hours of research have gone into tracing just some of those who lived and indeed died in the former Chesterfield Poor Law Union Workhouse on Newbold Road – latterly Scarsdale Hospital. Christ Church was the burial place of most of the workhouse occupants who died there.

The exhibition will be officially opened by the Mayor of Chesterfield on Monday 11 July at 11 am. There is no charge for admission. We don’t currently have details on the price of the book.

Our congratulations to Chesterfield St Helens Local History Society and Chesterfield and District Family History Society for reaching this stage in their research.
